- Feb 20Nathan Roman 📈 – Understanding Equipment Qualification. IQ. OQ. PQ. Equipment qualification isn’t a regulatory exercise. It’s how you prove critical equipment will perform when it matters most. In health and life sciences, IQ, OQ, and PQ form the backbone of equipment validation. Together, they ensure systems operate consistently, compliantly, and under control across their lifecycle. Design Qualification (DQ): DQ is the true starting point. It translates user requirements and risk assessments into specific design features and acceptance criteria. This is where you define what must be controlled to protect product quality and patient safety. Done well, DQ sets clear scope and boundaries for everything that follows. It keeps qualification focused on what actually matters. Installation Qualification (IQ): IQ verifies the equipment is installed according to the approved design. Correct location. Utilities. Documentation. Environmental conditions. Safety features. → Think of IQ as confirming all the right pieces are in the right place. Operational Qualification (OQ): OQ demonstrates the equipment operates as intended. Testing is performed across defined operating ranges using SOPs and manufacturer guidance, against the acceptance criteria established during DQ. → This is where design intent becomes proven functionality. Performance Qualification (PQ): PQ confirms consistent performance under routine, real-world conditions. Different operators. Normal materials. Environmental variation. This is the evidence that the process stays in control day after day. The bigger picture: IQ, OQ, and PQ are not standalone events. They sit within a lifecycle that starts with risk-based DQ and continues through process validation and ongoing verification. When aligned, this approach helps you: → Maintain strong regulatory alignment → Reduce unnecessary testing → Focus on critical controls → Lower long-term cost If you need support with temperature mapping, equipment qualification, or building a risk-based DQ, let’s talk. Question for those of you reading this: Where do you see teams struggle most—DQ, OQ, or sustaining control after PQ?138
